Where the Treasures Come From

Every time you send your turtle out on an adventure, it comes back with something. Sometimes it’s a perfectly ordinary shell. Sometimes it’s a glowing creature you’ve never seen before.

This page tells you: where do all these things actually come from, and how is it decided what your turtle brings back?

Are these things real?

Yes, they are.

We hand-drew lots and lots of small ocean things into the list of what your turtle might bring back — shells you’d find on the beach, coral that only grows in the deep sea, and some tiny creatures that only glow at night. There are seven whole years of collectibles — you don’t have to gather them all at once. Just go year by year, slowly.

Every time your turtle goes out, it encounters one of them — but which one it meets is something it only finds out as it swims along. It has nothing to do with what you’re hoping for.

Why are some things so rare?

That’s just how the ocean is.

If you’re picking up shells on a beach, you’ll almost certainly find plenty of ordinary ones. But if you want to find a rare one — the kind that spirals like a rainbow — you might have to pick up a hundred before you see it once.

We don’t have a “cheat mode” — nobody can tell your turtle “bring back something rare this time.” It just follows the actual way things are distributed in the sea.

What does the journal say?

Every time your turtle comes home, it writes an entry in the journal.

The journal writes itself based on what the turtle brought back + where it went. For example:

“Today I swam to a bay full of purple coral. A little school of silver fish kept circling around me, like they were dancing. I spotted a tiny shiny pebble on the seafloor and brought it home.”

Each entry is written just for this trip — it’s not copied from anywhere else. The journal stays with you, and you can flip back to read old adventures whenever you want.

Can it remember what it’s brought before?

Yes.

Every item you’ve found goes into your collection. In the collection, the ones you’ve already found light up, and the ones you haven’t yet are gray, so you can see how many are still left to find. And once you’ve gathered all of this year’s collectibles, Turtle Island opens a new chapter of the story and carries you on into the next year.

You don’t need to worry about forgetting what you’ve collected — it all stays in your collection forever.

A reminder for you

Don’t rush to “collect everything at once.” Your turtle can only bring back one thing per trip, so take it slowly. Some things just take a long time to come across — that’s not a glitch, they’re just rare by nature.
